A couple, Eric and Leah Finnan have been sentenced to six years in jail after pleading guilty to charges of postal fraud and money laundering of goods from Amazon.

The couple, exploited Amazon’s customer service policy by falsely claiming that some electronics they ordered were damaged.

This led to a replacement of the electronics from Amazon at no charge.

The Finans, stole and sold more than 2,700 electronics including GoPro cameras, Xboxes, Samsung smartwatches, Microsoft Surface tablets and MacBooks.

The goods were sold to Danijiel Glumac who was given a 24 month prison sentence.

According to a release from the Department of Justice, the Finans also created hundreds of fake online identities and made around $750,000 in a little over two years from the scheme.

Eric and his wife were therefore sentenced to 71 and 68 months in prison respectively.

According to US Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, Josh Minkler, “Consumer fraud not only unjustly enriches the perpetrator, it causes all of us to pay higher retail prices.”

He as a result, cautioned those who seek to exploit the convenience of online shopping through fraud, to remember this case.

He indicated that when caught and prosecuted, victims could end up at the federal prison for a long time.
