Today’s STEM WOW  Lynda Chiwetelu, is a Computer Science and Statistics graduate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

When asked why she got into STEM, Lynda replied that she was fascinated with STEM and how it challenged her to create solutions.

“STEM is fascinating and challenging at the same time, but in a good way. The kind of challenge that leads you to create solutions and keeps you excited while you do it. I also found that I really enjoy Software programming and this directly influenced my decision to build a STEM career,” she told Nsesa Foundation.

“In short, I got into STEM because it is a fun way to create valuable solutions.”

Speaking of her greatest achievement, Lynda simply said, “Honestly, my greatest achievements have been excelling at my jobs so far.”

Lynda did an internship with Syscomptech Nigeria, where she built modules of websites from scratch with teammates based on client requests.

She previously worked as a Full-Stack developer on back-end Engineering at Hotels.ng, the largest hotel booking company in Nigeria.

She currently works as a Full-Stack Web Developer at BrandBastion and runs a blog.

Lynda also spoke of having to prove herself against the negative perception that women aren’t capable in the field of STEM.

“I haven’t faced too many challenges as a woman in STEM, but one challenge I have faced is having to prove myself because of the inherent perception some people hold that women are not so good in STEM fields.”

She added, “I overcome this every time by ignoring it, educating those I can educate, or simply focusing on my job and giving it my absolute best.”

To budding women in STEM, Lynda’s parting words were, “Keep at it. It is really rewarding, and we need more women than ever to start and stay in this field. Cheers.”
